Hadestown Cocktail

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

We invited friends for dinner a few weeks ago. Their daughter won a Tony award for the play Hadestown. We were honored to be taken to the Broadway play when it visited Greenville, South Carolina the day after the dinner. So, my wife and I decided to put our heads together and craft a special cocktail in celebration. This libation is a real crowdpleaser even for people who don’t necessarily like alcohol or cocktails, although it is chock-full of many different types of liquors. I can’t say that bourbon cocktails are the most popular but the addition of amaretto and raspberry liquor along with cranberry juice and Gingerale creates a very balanced drink. Add to cocktail shaker with ice along with a garnish of raspberries and you have a cocktail that will send you to Heaven not Hades!

Notes

If you have access to a large bourbon ice cube for the cocktail it makes a beautiful presentation and allows the drink not to get watered down quickly. In addition, the raspberries floating on top add to the scent and freshness of the drink along with the effervescence of the soda so make sure not to leave them out.

Ingredients

1-2 ounces Wild Turkey Bourbon (adjust to your taste)

.75 ounces Disaronno Liquor

.75 ounces Chambord Liquor

2 ounces chilled cranberry juice

Chilled Gingerale

Method

Combine bourbon, Disaronno, Chambord, and chilled cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake the mixture vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled highball glass containing ice. Top with Gingerale (I use Canada Dry or Schweppes) and garnish with 2 to 3 raspberries.
