Leave the Leaves

Increasingly as suburbia spreads and more lawns appear in what once was fields and forest. Lawns, which I love essentially become an ecological wasteland. Consider having an area of your yard mulched with fallen leaves. This gives you a great place to dispose of the leaves that fall on your lawn and has two wonderful benefits. First, leaf mold or compacted compost and leaves are some of the best mulch around creating rich soil for your vegetable and flower gardens. Second, large areas of leaves provide habitat for beneficial insects and other wildlife so you can do your part for the environment and your local community simply setting aside a part of your yard that is covered in leaves. At our home we have a 1.5 acre woodland garden all mulched with natural leaf mold. Besides who wants to mow the entire lawn or buy incredibly expensive mulch?
